Many organizations are using Partnering as a process to improve quality, corporate performance and profitability. They see Partnering as the building of business alliances for everyone’s mutual benefit throughout their business network, which includes: employees, suppliers, clients and other regulatory agencies and resources. What I have found during the years that I managed design and construction firms, and especially since becoming a management consultant, is that most firms need to first practice the concepts inside before trying to create great alliances outside their “corporate walls.” It is next to impossible to build great teamwork based on mutual trust and respect, open communications and shared goals when these attributes are not practiced within the organization itself.
When management does not ...
share with its employees what's going on, |
give clear performance expectations or feedback, |
show trust and confidence in its employees, |
keep commitments made to employees, |
hold themselves accountable, as they do their subordinates, |
have the courage to change their "old attitudes," |
try to understand the needs and aspirations of employees, |
pull together and use the wisdom and experience of employees, |
expect excellence from, or give excellence to, its employees ... |
… it cannot hope to succeed in new uncharted waters of accomplishing these tasks with strangers just because there is a contract. All of the good things that need to be done to do business Partnering in the design / construction / operation process need to be practiced, refined and perfected within an organization. Start the new way of doing business at home before trying to do it with others outside. Dealing with our fellow employees like we really do trust and respect them shouldn’t be that difficult. Firms that are successful through partnering have this edge over the competition.
